“Thou hast escaped me!” he repeated more than once. “Thou hast escaped me!” These words came from Chillingworth. Dimmesdale did escape him. Why did he escape him? I think Chillingworth lives from Dimmesdale's pain and as Dimmesdale just revealed his secret, his deepest sin, he did escape him, because now he is no longer a victim of Chillingworth' torture.
